Copyright registrations at record high

Increased awareness has boosted copyright registrations at the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) by 76 percent to  6,522 in 2023 from  3,706 registrations in 2022.

Data from IPOPHL showed out of the 17 classes in copyright,  books, pamphlets, articles, e-books, audio books, comics, novels and other writings category account for over half, 52.6 percent  of the copyright registrations.

This was followed by audiovisual works and cinematographic works 18.1 percent; and computer programs, software, games and applications 8.8 percent.

Musical compositions, with or without lyrics, accounted for  6.1 percent; drawings, paintings, architectural works, sculpture, engraving, prints, lithography, or other works of art, models or designs for works of art,  4.9 percent and; ornamental designs or models for articles of manufacture and industrial objects and other works of applied art, 3.2 percent.

Rowel Barba, IPOPHL director-general said the historic registrations for copyright show results of the agency’s efforts to increase awareness and help people understand the importance of safeguarding their IP.

“Although copyright protection is provided automatically upon creation, registration certificates provide an added layer of protection to copyrighted works,” Barba added.
