Competition to heat up as mobile number portability takes off

Local mobile telecom providers yesterday began implementing the mobile number portability (MNP) service, but subscribers may experience some inconvenience at the onset.

The MNP service, made available through Republic Act No. 11202 or the Mobile Number Portability Act, allows customers to keep their mobile numbers as they transfer from one provider to another, for free.

With the official launch of MNP, telcos are expected to face stiffer competition to keep and gain more subscribers.

PLDT Inc. mobile unit Smart is optimistic on the implementation of MNP.

“MNP is a game-changer, and Smart is best-positioned to champion this initiative and support the government’s call for world-class services for all Filipinos,” said Alfredo Panlilio, PLDT and Smart president and chief executive officer (CEO).

Under MNP, customers may also switch their prepaid account to a postpaid plan and vice-versa without replacing their mobile number.

To switch to the Smart network, a mobile user must first secure a unique subscriber code from his or her originating provider to serve as clearance and bring it to the nearest Smart store along with a valid ID and any proof of mobile ownership.

From there, Smart shall begin processing the MNP application without any charges.

“For all of you guys who want to try us and want to have a wonderful experience, you’re very much welcome with open arms and join us. Now is the best time to be with Globe,” Ernest Cu, Globe president and CEO, said in short video message to subscribers.

“Stick with us to enjoy more rewarding and uplifting experiences every day. And if you’re planning to come aboard to get the same perks as a Globe customer we welcome you with open arms,” Cu added.
