The total capacity of committed power plants from the private sector increased 33.8 percent as of end-2022, according to the Department of Energy (DOE).

The agency said the number increased to 10,210.49 megawatts (MW) for the period from 7,628.17 MW  as of end-2021.

DOE considers power plants as committed when these have achieved power supply agreements, financial close, system impact study and other permits from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the Energy Regulatory Commission.

On the DOE  list are those  to be built from this year to 2027 and  those that are yet to be decided.

The number only reflected capacity from traditional power plants and excluded committed battery energy storage facilities whose number went down by 1.5 percent to 2,080 MW from end-2021’s 2,112.59 MW.

Bulk of the committed capacity as of end-2022 equivalent to 9,170.16 MW are located in Luzon or over 89.8 percent of all planned projects.

Coal still has the highest share in committed projects at 3,685.40 MW followed by natural gas-fired power plants with 3,500 MW and solar with 2,317.25 MW.

Committed capacities for wind stood at 273.20 MW; hydro with 270.29 MW; geothermal with 74 MW; biomass with 48.60 MW; and oil-based plants with 41.75 MW.
