Laban Konsyumer Inc. (LKI) has called on the Department of Agriculture to strengthen its market monitoring after farm gate prices of chicken in the third quarter of the year went up by P15 per kilogram (kg.).

Vic Dimagiba, LKI president, in a statement said farm gate prices for the past month and the entire October increased for off size, regular size and prime size chicken to P115 per kg. compared to the previous P100 per kg.

Citing data from the Philippine Statistics Authority, Dimagiba said retail prices of whole chicken are now at a high of P190 per kg. and a low of P160 per kg. Prevailing price is at P180 per kg.

As of end-September, prices of whole chicken stood at a high of P180 per kg. and a low of P145 per kg. The prevailing price was P170 per kg.

LKI said that according to United Broilers and Raisers Association president, Elias Jose Inciong, the spread of the African swine fever (ASF) caused the shift in demand for chicken citing that historically, the first and last quarter of the year are periods of soft farm gate prices but is not the case for this year.

“…The holiday fever is also exerting pressure on commodity prices to go up. We call on the Department of Agriculture to strengthen monitoring of retail prices of chicken side by side with its ongoing efforts to contain the ASF epidemic,” Dimagiba stated.
