The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) targets to increase by 20 percent the aircraft movement per hour at the country’s main gateway, Ninoy Aquino International Airport.

In a statement, CAAP said it discussed collaboration with Hong Kong Civil Aviation  Department (CAD)  to achieve 48 airplane movements per hour at NAIA from the current 40 to 42 aircraft movements per hour.

This is in line with the Department of Transportation directive to raise NAIA capacity following the recent awarding of NAIA’s operations and management to  SMC SAP, and Co Consortium.,

CAAP director general Manuel Tamayo together with deputy director general for administration Danjun Lucas recently met the Hong Kong CAD chief Air Traffic Control Officer Samuel Ng to discuss methods for reasonably increasing the number of airplane movements per hour.

This is CAAP’s proactive step to adhere to the DOTr’s directive to increase airplane movements at NAIA to 48 per hour considering the infrastructure limitations of the airport.

The initiative to increase flight movement is in line with target to double the capacity at NAIA

However,  to do this and in line with the concession agreement to be executed with the private sector, DOTr wants CAAP to increase flight options.

“We wanted to collaborate if this is achievable and if yes, how and what to do to achieve the goal,” Lucas said.

Prior to this, CAAP had initiated measures to boost airplane movements.

Earlier, a group of air traffic controllers, along with a delegation from the Department of Transportation, visited the air traffic facilities at Hong Kong Airport to learn from its best practices.
