The Bureau of Customs (BOC) has exceeded its collection goal in May by 6.6 percent, which the agency attributed to improved valuation and volume of importations, and intensified collection efforts.
The BOC said in a statement yesterday it was able to rake in P49.334 billion last month, P3.058 billion higher than the P46.276 billion target.
The amount generated by the BOC for the month also significantly improved from May of last year’s P30.8 billion collection.
To recall, revenue efforts were affected around this time last year due to economic restrictions imposed as a response to the coronavirus pandemic.
Based on the preliminary report from the BOC financial service, 12 of the 17 collection districts exceeded their target for the month.
These are the ports of San Fernando, Manila, Batangas, Legaspi, Iloilo, Tacloban, Surigao, Cagayan de Oro, Davao, Subic and Clark, and the Manila International Container Port.
Year-to-date, the BOC collected P249.793 billion since January, reflecting 40.5 percent of the 2021 target collection of P616.749 billion.
In the first five months of the previous year, the BOC collected a lower amount of P210.5 billion, as tighter quarantine restrictions, due to the pandemic, were in place from mid-March 2020. – Angela Celis
