The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) has surpassed its collection target in October by 8.57 percent, the agency said in a statement yesterday.

The BIR said it collected P274.43 billion in October 2023, surpassing its collection goal by P21.65 billion for that month.

The tax agency’s revenues for the month saw a double-digit increase of 46.94 percent or P87.67 billion compared to tax collections for the same month last year.

With the bureau’s strong revenue performance in October, the BIR said cumulative collection from January to October 2023 has reached P2.13 trillion.

The year-to-date figure is higher by 11.11 percent or P213.21 billion compared to tax collections for the same period in 2022.

For 2023, the BIR’s collection target is set at P2.634 trillion, which is higher by 12.99 percent or P303.5 billion than the 2022 actual collection.

“With the intensification of the bureau’s tax enforcement activities, specifically on the campaign against sellers and buyers of fake receipts, and with the continuous streamlining and digitization of the BIR’s core services, we hope to encourage all non-compliant taxpayers to comply fully with the provisions and requirements of the tax laws so we can attain, and even surpass, our annual collection target this year,” BIR commissioner Romeo Lumagui Jr. said.

In a separate statement, Lumagui also committed to clean the ranks of the BIR regularly.

In an effort to stop corruption in the BIR, Lumagui, under his term, has removed 26 and suspended two employees. He also filed a criminal case against a BIR employee who was found to be tampering with point-of-sale machines.
