BioPower led by Negros Island Biomass Holdings Inc. targets to have its three biomass power plants worth P16 billion to be operational before the year ends.

The projects funded by global investment firm ThomasLloyd are all located in Negros and are expected to generate 70 megawatts (MW) of baseload capacity fueled primarily by sugarcane field residues sourced within the region.

The company said San Carlos BioPower (SCBP), one of the three plants in development, achieved a power generation level of 20 MW last September and is the first in the world to purely run on sugarcane trash.

Two more biomass power plants, North Negros BioPower and South Negros BioPower will be connected to the grid within this year.

“The plant has accomplished its proof of concept from the logistical system of sugarcane trash collection to the conversion to electricity… The team is pleased to finally have SCBP connect and export power to the grid. Our goal is to have all three of our plants running by end of this year and improve the quality of power in the island of Negros,” said Arthur Aguilar, BioPower president.

The company in a statement said the power facilities will all be supported by 12 transloading stations to annually collect and utilize more than 610,000 tons of feedstock as fuel to provide 510 gigawatt hours of energy on its first year of operation, estimated to power 160,000 homes and reduce 57,680 tons of carbon emissions.
