Automotive output up, but below pre-COVID

Production of four-wheel motor vehicles and of motorcycles in the Philippines went up in 2022 but the numbers have yet to return to pre-pandemic levels, data of the Asean Automotive Federation (AAF)  showed yesterday.

AAF said motor vehicle output rose 24 percent last year to 92,223 units from 83,846 units in 2021, making the Philippines the fifth largest producer in the six  countries in Asean, and just 2 percent of total production in the region.

Last year’s output is a few thousands shy of pre-COVID production of 95,094 units logged in 2019.

Asean produced a combined 4.38 million units,  up 24 percent from 3.54 million in 2021.
Thailand continues to lead in production at 1.88 million units.

Philippine motorcycle production meanwhile rose 7.8 percent to 934,685 units from 7.45 million in 2021.

The Philippines, the second largest motorcycle producer in Asean, accounted for 27 percent of the region’s output of 3.64 million which is an increase of 16 percent from 3.14 million in 2021. Again, Thailand led the region and produced 2 million units.

In sales, the Philippines also landed as fifth in Asean for motor vehicles at 352,596 units and second for motorcycles at 1.56 million units.

The region sold 3.4 million units of motor vehicles, an increase of 23 percent from 2.79 million in 2019.

Asean was led by Indonesia which sold 1.05 million for motor vehicles.

Motorcycle sales last year stood at  4 million units, up 14 percent from 3.55 million units in 2021 and led  by Thailand which sold 1.79 million units.
