Despite challenging consumer sentiment, vehicle sales rose  17 percent in the first half of 2022, following a 27 percent surge in June.

A joint report of the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines Inc. (Campi) and Truck Manufacturers Association  showed year-to-date sales stood at 154,874 units from 132,767 units in the same period in 2021.

Rommel Gutierrez, Campi president, in a statement said June performance was driven by the pent-up demand from consumers amid the less than ideal economic conditions recorded in the same period.

“The industry is optimistic of sustaining motor vehicle sales in its current pre-pandemic trendline in the coming months, albeit challenging amid the ongoing headwinds to the economic recovery, which continue to affect consumer confidence and overall employment,” Gutierrez said.

Total passenger car sales as of June were down 8 percent to date to 39,003 units from 42,206 units last year.

The decline was offset by the 28 percent increase in sales of commercial vehicles to 11,871 units from  90,361 units and widening its share to total sales to 75 percent.

By brand,  Toyota continued to dominate  despite supply woes experienced the past weeks.

Toyota sales as of June stood at 80,090 units or 52 percent market share and a 25.6 percent increase from 63,758 units in 2021.

Mitsubishi held on to the second spot at 20,734 units or a 13.39 percent market share and a 4.4 percent jump from 19,658 units a year ago.

At third was Nissan which sold 11,188 units , 7 percent share and 24 percent higher than last year’s 9,047 units. Irma Isip
