Motorcycle ride-hailing service provider Angkas plans to expand its operation in Visayas and Mindanao once the government legalizes the motorcycle taxis in the country within the year.

George Royeca, Angkas chief transport advocate, said Angkas is keen to expand in congested key cities such as Davao, Cagayan de Oro, Iloilo and Batangas.

The trial operation of Angkas is in adherence to the directive and recommendations of the technical working group (TWG) created by the Department of Transportation (DOTr) to study the feasibility of motorcycle taxis.

In June 2019, Angkas was granted by the DOTr a six-month trial run that legally allowed the service to operate in Metro Manila and Metro Cebu.

At present, Angkas has 2 million downloads. It trained 27,000 biker-partners on new safety protocols to comply with the requirements of the DOTr TWG.
Royeca said the company is optimistic its operation will be legalized this year.

“I’m always optimistic. The pilot is running very smoothly. We’ve been sending reports to the Department of Transportation. We will be meeting with the TWG in a couple of weeks,” Royeca said.
