Amkor Technology Philippines Inc. said it plans to transfer more of its services and manufactured products to the Philippines.

Amkor officials led by Chief Operating Officer Kevin Engel informed President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. of the company’s plans during a courtesy call in Malacañang, the Presidential Communications Office (PCO) said in a news release on Tuesday.

The company manufactures semiconductor and electronic devices.

Marcos welcomed Amkor’s plans, which come at a time when the administration is pushing for more skilled Filipinos trained in chip manufacturing and integrated circuit design.

“Your continued involvement in the Philippines is something that certainly we would like to encourage as we are trying to move our semiconductor industry up the value chain from pure fabrication to design,” the president said.

“The semiconductor industry accounts for a significant portion of the country’s electronic sector,” the communications office said.

Data from Philippine Statistics Authority showed exports of semiconductor products amounted to $29.16 billion or 40 percent of the $73 billion total exports in 2024.

Amkor Technology, headquartered in Arizona, USA, started its first semiconductor business in South Korea in 1968, and had been known since then as a global leader in the outsourced semiconductor assembly and test industry.

It registered with the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) in December 1995.

On its list of registered companies, PEZA identified Amkor Technology Philippines as Amkor Anam Pilipinas and Amkor Technology Philippines. Its registration showed it was 60 percent American-owned and 40 percent Cayman Islands-owned.

Apart from manufacturing semiconductor devices, Amkor provides various services, including back grinding, wafer mapping, assembly and strip testing.

Amkor said the Philippines has a “very good workforce” and its semiconductor and electronics industries are expected to continue to grow.

Also present during the courtesy call were Amkor Corporate Vice President Mohandass Sivakumar, and President and Country Head for Amkor Technology Philippines Norberto Viera.

The Philippines also hosts renowned semiconductors and electronics companies such as Panasonic Murata, Sumitomo Electric, Samsung, Brother, Canon, Toshiba and Epson.
