800K registered online for 1st step of nat’l ID

Nearly 850,000 Filipinos have successfully registered online for the first step of the Philippine Identification System (PhilSys) registration, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) said in a statement yesterday.

The PSA said that as of May 13, it has recorded a total of 849,862 registrants who have completed the online step one registration.

“Public interest in the PhilSys online registration continues to increase as more individuals register for the national ID,” the PSA said.

The pilot online step one registration began on April 30, and the PSA said it was “received well” despite technical errors the website encountered.

“PSA continues to develop user-management strategies to improve the website and accommodate more registrants,” the agency said.

The PSA said that close to 34 million have already completed the first step of the registration via the house-to-house collection of demographic data in priority provinces.

The launch of the online step one registration aims to boost the general public’s engagement with PhilSys without compromising health and safety protocols, the PSA said.

The second step of the registration process involves capturing a registrant’s biometric data such as their iris scans, fingerprint scans, and front-facing photograph at local registration centers. The third and final step will involve the issuance of the PhilSys Number (PSN) and the physical ID or the PhilID.

The PSN is a randomly generated number that will serve as a permanent identification number for every registrant. – A. Celis
