The Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) said five provinces in the region are being eyed as pilot areas for a cattle production program to boost supply of beef in the region.

Emmanuel Piñol, MinDA secretary, said Lanao del Sur, Davao del Norte and North Cotabato, have signified interest to join the program while two more provinces are being evaluated based on the availability of space for a cattle breeding and fattening facility and of forage materials.

“Under the program, the Development Bank of the Philippines will be engaged to provide funding support to local government units which will participate in the program. Initially, each of the five pilot areas will start with at least 500 cows (female cattle) to be purchased from local farmers for the artificial insemination program which would introduce outstanding genetics, like wagyu,” Piñol said, referring to the popular Japanese breed.
