San Miguel Corp.’s unsolicited proposal to extend the Tarlac-Pangasinan-La Union Expressway (TPLEX) up to San Juan, La Union is lined up for approval by the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) board this quarter, according to the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
In December 2018, SMC unit San Miguel Holdings Corp. obtained original proponent status (OPS) for the P23.9-billion TPLEX extension project.
Once the project secures NEDA board approval, the DPWH will conduct the Swiss challenge within the year. Through Swiss challenge, other companies can submit a better offer and the project proponent has the right to match the offer.
The 59.4-kilometer (km), four-lane toll road project is comprised of three segments in La Union: 18 kms. from Rosario to Tubao; 23 kms. from Tubao to Naguilian and; 18.4 kms. from Naguilian to San Juan.
SMC through its unit Private Infra Dev Corp (PIDC) holds the concession for the existing 88.85-km TPLEX that runs from Tarlac City to Rosario, La Union.
Aside from TPLEX, SMC has also submitted a proposal for the expansion of the NAIA Expressway. This is also subject to NEDA board approval this quarter .
SMC also operates Skyway, South Luzon Expressway and Southern Tagalog Arterial Road.
