Subsidies to GOCCs up 8.5% in 2022

The national government’s subsidies to government-owned and -controlled corporations in 2022 rose by 8.47 percent versus the previous year’s level, data released by the Bureau of the Treasury (BTr) showed.

According to the latest cash operations report, subsidies in January to December 2022 totaled to P200.41 billion, up from the P184.77 billion recorded in the previous year.

The lion’s share of the subsidies released to state-run firms, amounting to P80.05 billion, went to the Philippine Health Insurance Corp (PhilHealth).

The subsidy support to PhilHealth is often allocated for the payment of health insurance premiums of indigent beneficiaries.

The National Irrigation Administration (NIA), which is responsible for irrigation development and management, is the second biggest recipient for the period with P40.66 billion.

The National Housing Authority (NHA) completes the list of top three recipients for the month with P17.13 billion.

Other major recipients are Power Sector Assets and Liabilities Management Corp. with P8 billion and the National Food Authority with P7 billion.

In December alone, subsidies to state-firms amounted to P32.07 billion, 50.17 percent higher than the year ago level of P21.36 billion.

PhilHealth was the top recipient for the month with P14.61 billion.

Other billionaire recipients are NHA with P3.09 billion, National Electrification Administration with P2.74 billion, NIA with P2.26 billion and the Social Housing Finance Corp. with P1.78 billion. – Angela Celis
