The Philippines continued to lag in sales and in production of motor vehicles in Asean in the first eight months of the year, statistics from the Asean Automotive Federation showed.
At fifth of the six Asean countries producing four-wheel vehicles, the Philippines registered an output of 54,918 units for the year ending August, slightly up from from 54,551 in 2021.
That is just 2 percent of the production of the region which stood at 2.8 million from 2.19 million.
The Philippines bested Myanmar which produced 3,088 units.
Leading the Asean economies is Thailand which produced 1.22 million; Indonesia, 920,376; Malaysia, 439,372; and Vietnam, 160,856.
The Philippines also placed fifth in terms of sales in the first eight months o 2022 at 212,872 units, an increase of 25 percent from 179,112 units.
That is about 10 percent of the sales in the region at 2.21 million, a 31 percent growth from 1.68 million a year ago.
Indonesia sold the most at 658,232 units followed by Thailand, 589,863; Malaysia, 447,209; and Vietnam, 262,940.
The Philippines bested Myanmar and Singapore which sold 6,579 units and 28,910 units, respectively. – Irma Isip
