Finance Secretary Benjamin Diokno has recommended some names to the President for consideration as the next Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) governor.
Diokno, who is former BSP chief, said an announcement may be made in the next few days on who will be the next central bank governor.
The finance chief, however, did not mention the names of those he recommended for the post.
Asked to describe who the next BSP governor should be, Diokno said, “I am consistent in saying that the governor should not be an ex-banker.”
“Number two, you really have to be a professional economist, then have international stature,” he added.
Current BSP Governor Felipe Medalla took his place on June 30 last year and is serving the remaining term of Diokno, who was then appointed as finance chief.
Diokno was appointed as central bank governor in March 2019 to complete the six-year term of the late Nestor Espenilla Jr. That six-year term ends on July 3. – Angela Celis
