Globe taps growing demand for home broadband

Globe Telecom Inc. is optimistic to meet the increasing demand in home broadband services, particularly in the provinces, through its aggressive network expansion.

“The potential of home broadband remains a source of inspiration for us. This segment is largely untapped so there are a lot of households that are looking to be connected. We hope to fill this demand with our aggressive network rollout in the second half not only in urban areas but even in provinces all over the country,” Ernest Cu, Globe president and chief executive officer, said in a statement.

Globe’s home broadband business also boosted company efforts to absorb the impact of the pandemic by turning in P12.5 billion in revenues, up 19 percent from the P10.6 billion posted in the same period last year.

Its home broadband subscriber base reached nearly 2.9 million and the company expects this to continue to grow as more households gear up for working and learning from home, and more are expected to follow suit as public schools reopen in October.

“Data continues to be a bright spot for business, as demand remains strong and steadily growing. Especially at this time of pandemic, internet access serves as a lifeline for many Filipinos. People use the internet to do work from home, conduct business, make payments, and homeschooling, among others. We expect this trend to continue until the rest of the year,” said Cu.

Globe’s mobile data revenues turned in P35.8 billion six months into 2020 and mobile data traffic surged 45 percent to 1,106 petabytes as more customers spend their time online, either for work at home schemes or simply using the internet for business, entertainment and online learning.

Globe spent P20.9 billion for capital expenditure (capex) in the first half of the year, which is 10 percent higher than last year and represents 29 percent of gross service revenues and 54 percent of earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization.

Bulk of the capex went to data-related requirements, comprising 76 percent of the total capital spending for the period.

Meanwhile, Globe is set to expand further its network capability with simultaneous undertaking of cellsite builds in different parts of the country, including Aklan, Albay, Batangas, Bohol, Bulacan, Cebu, Davao del Sur, Iloilo, Laguna, Metro Manila, Maguindanao, Negros Occidental, Pampanga, Pangasinan, Quezon, Zamboanga, Sulu, Capiz, Nueva Ecija, Nueva Vizcaya, Tarlac, Palawan, North Cotabato, Leyte, Bukidnon, Benguet, Zambales and more starting until the end of the third quarter of 2020.
