GUNNING for win No. 6.
That’s the task facing College of St. Benilde when it takes on struggling San Sebastian College today in the 100th NCAA basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
The game is set at 11 a.m. before defending champion San Beda and Letran rekindle their rivalry in the main match at 2:30 p.m.
Barely holding on the top spot with a 5-1 record, the Blazers can extend their grip of the lead against the Golden Stags, who have been on a freefall after winning their first two outings and dropping their last five.
Except for a crushing 69-71 loss to the Knights two weeks back, the Blazers have been nothing short of brilliant, their latest win a 103-78 thumping of the Lyceum Pirates last Friday.
Allen Liwag, who bulldozed his way to 22 points and 12 rebounds, and Justine Sanchez, who made all his five shots from the field and eight from the foul line to finish with 18 points the last time out, are expected to lead the Blazers anew.
Trying to catch up is Letran, in joint second with Mapua at 5-2, if it could hurdle the Red Lions, age-old nemesis.
The Knights survived the Perpetual Help Altas 82-73 in triple overtime three days ago.
But they would need to handle the Lions, who have split their first six assignments, including a heartbreaking 70-72 setback to the Arellano University Chiefs last Saturday.
Meanwhile, the league announced that it has moved its Oct. 6 games pitting CSB against JRU and SSC vs. EAC from the San Juan-based venue to Oct. 8 at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay, which will have a triple-header that will include a duel between San Beda and Mapua.
