PBA legend Jimmy Alapag must be smiling after San Miguel Beer shooter Marcio Lassiter boomed in his third three-pointer at the 7:10 mark of the first quarter against Ginebra last Sunday night in the PBA Governors’ Cup.
The big Smart Araneta Coliseum crowd roared after Lassiter’s triple off a stop-and-pop in transition against the Kings’ Maverick Ahanmisi found nothing but the bottom of the net—with Beermen teammate and reigning eight-time MVP June Mar Fajardo raising his right hand’s three fingers.
Lassiter pointed skyward and blew kisses to the heavens, in cloud nine after his trey pushed him past Alapag as No. 1 in the pro league’s all-time list of most three-pointers made.
“Jimmy texted me last Saturday. We just talked a little bit. He showed his gratitude, he was proud of the accomplishment,” Lassiter said. “He wished he could be here. But he said he’ll be full-on, just be there supporting.
“He’s back home in the States. He just gave his wishes and said hi to the family, and… ‘Just keep on pushing the needle,’” he added.
Lassiter added three more threes to raise his total to 1,254 career triples and wound up with 18 points as SMB likewise found itself in the record books after it bludgeoned Ginebra 131-82 for its fourth straight win and gained the solo lead in Group B.
Alapag held the erstwhile No. 1 spot with 1,250 triples.
“I’m very happy for him. I’m very blessed to be his coach. He’s the man of the hour,” Beermen coach Jorge Gallent said after his wards handed the Kings their biggest losing margin in franchise history.
It was also Ginebra tactician Tim Cone’s biggest losing deficit in his coaching stint in Asia’s pioneering pro league while it was SMB’s biggest winning edge so far.
“I’m just truly honored and blessed to be in this position. Words can’t describe how I feel. I’m just overwhelmed with a lot of emotions right now,” Lassiter, 37, said.
The 6-foot-2 Lassiter, a former Gilas Pilipinas standout tabbed fourth overall by the defunct Powerade Tigers in 2011, said he could not have done it without his past and present teammates.
“I definitely couldn’t do this without my teammates from the past and right now,” Lassiter said. “They’ve helped me out so much, especially… I feel like the main two that probably gave me the most assists are June Mar and Chris (Ross).”
Fajardo showed the way for the Beermen with 24 points and 17 rebounds while CJ Perez had 22 and two.
Terrence Romeo, import Jordan Adams, and Don Trollano also supplied 14, 12, and 11 markers, respectively as SMB did an encore to a 139-127 whipping of Phoenix last Friday and rose to 6-2.
Ginebra, which came off a 124-102 win over Rain or Shine four nights ago, slipped to 5-3 for third.
Rookie RJ Abarrientos paced the Kings with 19 points while resident reinforcement Justin Brownlee added 16.
Japeth Aguilar and Scottie Thompson also got 15 and 13 markers, respectively for Ginebra.
Lassiter did the feat in just 538 games and certainly more big trifectas are in the offing.
“I’m kind of happy it’s here. We can say a lot of fans witnessed it. I’m just happy for them,” he said. “Hopefully, there’s more to come.”
