Women empowerment through art

The art world is dominated mainly by male maestros — an irony considering that many notable painters in the past had beautiful muses serving as inspiration for their works.

The Sining Filipina national art competition aims to give women a platform in the art scene to express their artistic talents, promoting them as originators of art and empowering them in the creative realm. The project is a collaboration between the Zonta Club of Makati and Environs, SM Supermalls, and BDO Unibank, Inc.

“The time has come that women are represented and given a spotlight in the field of fine arts. Art to me is a sensory reflection or expression of the human condition. For years, it has been dominated by the worldview of men. Now it is said that women hold half of the sky, so I think that it is just right that on earth, women should be given a chance to give their worldview in a more meaningful way,” Zonta Club of Makati and Environs vice president Joanne Zapanta-Andrada said.

The art competition is open to all Filipino women regardless of age and status, professional artists or not. All submitted artworks should be either acrylic and oil artworks only, on a canvas either 2ft x 3ft or 3ft x 3ft in size. There will be 2 categories, namely Figurative and Non-Figurative or abstract categories. The deadline for submission is on January 31, 2024.

The competition offers a generous cash prize of P250,000 for the First Place Winner, P150,000 for the Second Place, and P100,000 for the Third Place Winner, providing not only recognition but also a significant boost to their artistic journey.
