Bruce Winton, Multi-Property vice president Philippines at Marriott International, told Malaya Business Insight that their priorities have been to ensure their facilities, staff, and staff services are up to par.
“There had been a quantum shift over the pandemic period in terms of skill set, turnover and lack of funding for repairs and capex. I am happy to say that we can be proud that our efforts paid off and are currently experiencing very positive reviews from guests as we get back to pre-pandemic levels of business,” Winton said.
“Also, shifting our marketing and offerings to target the customers of today and their evolving needs has been a priority,” Winton also said.
Nobody was left untouched by the pandemic and the additional pressure on its teams both personally and professionally were supported in a large part by its community at work.
“The support systems we put in place to look after our associates, to take care of their emotional and physical well-being, was integral to our ability to recover as quickly as we did,” he added.
Winton said that in his immediate executive team, nearly everyone has 20 years of experience working for Marriott. They embody the hotel company’s culture and believe in its purpose as well as inspire and nurture all those who report to them, and so it goes from there.
As he visits about-to-be-nine-properties around the country, Winton is inspired to see so many familiar faces in their new teams — these are associates who have worked for the hotel company in Cebu, Iloilo, Clark, and Manila and they are getting promoted or, in some cases, re-joining Marriott as they open these new hotels.
“It is inspiring and creates such a sense of belonging,” he also added. “It is why I have been working for Marriott all my professional life and it makes a palpable difference.”
Winton shared: “We have the most recognizable brands in hospitality and the more distribution we achieve in the Philippines, the more likely people are to make that first visit to the country. The more distribution we have, the more jobs we create, and the more value we provide to local communities and the entire value chain of stakeholders we automatically support when we open a hotel.”
Marriott defines a real triumph/victory by providing opportunities for people. “This is our purpose. Speaking personally, I have seen how Marriott has changed the lives of hundreds of thousands of associates around the world (including mine), and if you ask Mr. Marriott what he is most proud of, this is the one thing he always talks about,” he mentioned.
