TNT gets much-needed boost

TNT is leaving no stone left unturned in its drive in the season-opening PBA Commissioner’s Cup.

Tropang Giga coach Jojo Lastimosa is using his vast reservoir of connections to boost the team’s chances — he has tapped legendary import Sean Chambers to help him toughen up his charges.

“I’m here, really to get a chance to work with Talk ‘N Text and get a chance to get my feet and feel back for the PBA,” Chambers said after joining TNT’s practice in its training camp at the Inspire Sports Academy in Calamba, Laguna.

“I was given an opportunity to teach some of the young guys some of the things I’ve learned about being a successful player and a successful import here in the PBA,” he added.

Lastimosa and Chambers were long-time teammates with the defunct Alaska franchise where they won six titles together, including the rare grand slam in 1996–the same year Chambers bagged the best import award in the Governors’ Cup.

Chambers, 58, said success cannot be achieved overnight.

“There are certain guidelines to being successful and you can’t shortchange those,” Chambers said.

“For myself, those are the things I can help teach and implement for the short stay that I’m here to help out my favorite teammate of all time, Jojo Lastimosa.”

The new cage wars in Asia’s first play-for-pay league opens shop with the 47th Season Leo Awards taking place before the formal opening ceremony and followed by the TNT-Magnolia showdown.

The highly anticipated clash pitting defending champion Ginebra and the Tropang Giga will highlight the Dec. 25 double-header that also features a showdown between San Miguel Beer and Phoenix, still at the Big Dome.

The flagship squad of the MVP group will be without guard Roger Pogoy due to a rare heart condition, while big men JP Erram (knee) and Justin Chua (ACL) are still recovering from injuries.

Fil-Am gunner Mikey Williams and TNT are also locked in an impasse.

Set to be bannered anew by reigning Third Conference top reinforcement Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, the Tropang Giga should gain valuable lessons from Chambers, known as “Mr. 100 percent.”
