Reviving Escolta’s art scene

Amid the historic streets of Escolta, a new wave of art is emerging, spearheaded by John Lucas Nieto and his family. What started as a pandemic project in March 2021 has grown into a mission to restore Escolta as a vibrant art district. I sat down with Lucas to discuss The Art District’s journey, the challenges they’ve faced, and their ambitious plans for the future.

Lucas said that the gallery was started by his father, Manila City Vice Mayor Yul Servo Nieto, with help from his siblings. Eventually, his father became busy with other commitments, and his siblings had other businesses to attend to. So, his brother Luis and him, being the eldest, took on the responsibility.

Lucas explained that the primary goal since 2021 has been to revive Escolta’s art scene, which had faded over the years. Historically, Escolta was a hub for the arts before the spotlight shifted to Antipolo.

“Our plan is to bring back the art scene to Escolta and support art students and local artists from Manila,” Lucas said.

As the gallery director, Lucas handles various tasks, from advising on gallery operations to managing social media. Despite his background in business (he holds a entrepreneurship degree from University of Santo Tomas), he has embraced the art world with enthusiasm.

The gallery is continuously innovating. Lucas and his team plan to launch merchandise online and are open to various mediums, including unexpected submissions like artworks made from plastic or waste materials. Inclusivity is also a priority, with upcoming exhibits featuring works by persons with disabilities.

Lucas’ team is notably young and deeply committed to the gallery’s mission.

“I feel at home at the gallery because of my team. It’s like a second home to me,” Lucas shared.

The pandemic pushed many galleries to go virtual, and Lucas’ gallery embraced this trend.

They’ve successfully used social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok to attract more visitors.

Competing with established galleries in commercial areas, Lucas believes their unique location in Manila’s historic district gives them an edge. The classical building and the rich history of Escolta add a distinct charm.

There are plans to expand, with potential projects like a car-free zone in Escolta to enhance its appeal as an art district. Lucas and his father are committed to restoring Escolta’s former glory as an art hub.

Apart from the gallery, Lucas runs a successful laundry and water refilling business. His laundry service in Binondo caters to residents who prefer drop-off services, setting it apart from self-service competitors.

Lucas credits his father, Yul Servo Nieto, as his mentor and inspiration. From a young age, he was exposed to art and business, learning valuable lessons in perseverance and hard work.
