The Philippine Travel Agencies Association (PTAA) is bracing for an uptick in travel this year after the country logged 5.45 million arrivals in 2023.
PTAA cited the country’s popularity in global surveys, government initiatives and travel trends as factors in fueling the uptick.
“The lifting of COVID-19 restrictions made travel to the Philippines much more accessible compared to the previous years. Initiatives like the e -arrival cards, streamline the entry process, for the improving ease of travel and the DOT Secretary Christina Frasco launched Love the Philippines based on the demand of the industry after the pandemic,” said Evangeline Tankiang-Manotok, PTAA president.
“As an organization, PTAA can continue to help increase tourist arrivals in the Philippines by continuing to promote beyond the famous beaches and islands, showcasing eco-tourism, adventure, activities, cultural immersion and culinary experiences. We should implement responsible tourism practices to protect natural resources and ensure local communities benefit from the increased traffic,” says Manotok .
One trend that PTAA is hoping to capitalize in is B-Leisure where business and leisure travel come together.
This entails more co-working spaces in hotels, resorts offering wellness retreats, alongside conferences and flexible work from anywhere.
“We see travelers as blending business trips with cultural exploration. So being productive mornings followed by afternoon kayaking in the calm waters – the ultimate work-life balance,” Manotok said.
Another tourism trend PTAA hopes to promote is sustainable adventures where travelers will seek destinations with a commitment to responsible tourism practices like reducing the carbon footprint, reserving natural resources and supporting local communities.
Manotok said travelers nowadays are seeking authentic real world experiences which means immersing themselves in other cultures and seeking curated experiences that are unique or out of the ordinary.
“People are raring to travel, to explore and discover the world,” said Patria Chiong, chairperson, TTE 2024.
Strong domestic tourism and government campaigns play crucial rules.
“With our stunning beaches, friendly locals and affordability, the country can ensure continued success in the post pandemic travel landscape,” Manotok added
To support the Department of Tourism’s goal of hitting 7.7 million arrivals this year, PTAA is mounting the 31st Travel Tour Expo (TTE) and the 9th International Travel Trade Expo 2024 on February 2 to 4, at the SMX Convention Center Manila, Pasay City.
