“Love, Light & Laughter” celebrates Haraya and Jomike Tejido’s journey as a couple in the form of a visual art diary. Being together for over two decades, the show celebrates the various stages of the artists’ relationship from its foundation in young love as high school sweethearts, to young adulthood, and now as parents to two daughters.
The pieces on “Love” tell about the spark of discovering love and finding a life partner. This includes the foundational experiences, adjustments, and trials that a couple goes through in the early years of togetherness. “Light” relates to that deeper stage of the relationship where the mere presence of a partner brings joy to a heavy day, calmness in a hectic situation. Light also brings a ray of positive reinforcement as they go through challenges that are part and parcel in the growth of a relationship.Lastly, the pieces on “Laughter” exemplify how the key to the two artists’ relationship is how they simply be the living source of happiness in each other’s life.
Haraya’s polychromatic hues resemble cross sections of a canyon or a mountainside representing experiences that make up a strong foundation of love forged through time.
Her layers seem to grow organically, as if blown by the wind or swept by an unseen current, symbolizing the natural ebb and flow of time, taking relationships to the next level.
Contrasting elements pepper the artist’s multihued landscapes, representing the push and pull of a relationship. There is darkness and light, ups and downs as well as tree-like and crystalline–that all celebrate the balance when opposites attract.
Jomike’s works are visual renditions of joy and kinetic energy that love has brought into his life. The strong saturations of color represent youthful passion. The intrinsic whimsical nature of his pieces now represent how a relationship can be both playful yet serious. Growth and maturity are symbolized by the heart-leafed philodendrons rooted in each piece.
Haraya and Jomike’s first set of collaborative pieces take their distinctive elements and combine them to exemplify how their differences work when put together. Jomike’s vertically-oriented work balances Haraya’s horizontally flowing direction is visual celebration of their duality.
