Three global electronics and semiconductor companies are putting up factories in the Philippines starting this year, with two of them investing as much as $750 million or P42 billion.
The three projects will create as many as 6,600 jobs.
“We were able to to attract a couple of big investments. They are now in the process of finalizing their entry,” said Perry Ferrer, chairman and chief executive officer of electronics firm EMS Group, in a chance interview.
Ferrer said one of the investors is a European company, which is putting up a facility in Batangas, for the production of a consumer electric product geared for women.
Job prospects will be between 4,000 and 5,000.
Ferrer said two semiconductor companies, one American and the other Japanese, will also set up shop in Calabarzon.
The investments would amount to $700 million to $750 million and additional employment would be anywhere from 800 to 1,600.
Ferrer said on its own, EMS has finished phase one of its expansion in Laguna Technopark and is now undertaking the second phase.
The American semiconductor company has an existing operation in China and plans to relocate.
He said the Philippines has the potential to capture investments from companies that are relocating their factories from China due to the competitive advantage of the local semiconductor and electronics sector.
