Finding life beyond cancer

Cancer has always been one of the most dreaded diseases among Filipinos. For many, being diagnosed with cancer is considered akin to receiving a death sentence. However, medical technology has improved by leaps and bounds over the years and cancer patients can still live fulfilling lives even when they are battling this disease.

The Philippine Society of Medical Oncologists (PSMO) developed the Cancer Fair as a way for industry stakeholders, patients, support groups, families, and caregivers to get together, both to discuss developments in cancer care, and to celebrate life, offering a moment of levity and respite for everyone. As the event is held face-to-face again this year — the first since the pandemic, the group has expanded its presence to include multiple cities across the Philippines.

“Ater the pandemic, to celebrate life and wellness, and being proactive with our health, and also celebrate life and give hope to other people, we relaunched Cancer Fair but this time, it is a nationwide event. Previously, we’ve been conducting the Cancer Fair only in one location,” Dr. Herdee Gloriane C. Luna, chair of the PSMO’s Multimedia Committee.

The Cancer Fair will be held simultaneously at the Dagupan City Astrodome in Pangasinan, Robinson’s Starmills in San Fernando, Pampanga, Filoil Arena in San Juan, Metro Manila, and SM City Iloilo on August 9. This will be followed by Cebu at the SM Seaside City on August 19.

The treatment of cancer is a draining process to both individuals and their families. For many, the physical effects of the treatment can be emotionally scarring. The debilitating effects also result in significant changes in lifestyles for both the patient and their families. The Cancer Fair aims to bring these people together to show that life does go on despite the disease and there are many ways to find a degree of normalcy despite the disease.

More than just an avenue for cancer patients to cope with the disease, the Cancer Fair aims to bring hope to participants. Aside from innovations in treatment methods, knowing that there are others who have gone through the same experience in the past can be a source of strength to many cancer patients and their families.

“There will be inspirational talks, health and wellness discussions, exercise demos, do good and feel-good tips, makeup sessions, entertainment, raffles, and other activities prepared in each site. Cancer patients, cancer survivors, patient advocates, families, friends, and anyone who wants to learn about cancer, wellness, and proactive tips can attend the fair for free,” Dr. Luna said.

Cancer remains a disease that is feared by many but the upcoming Cancer Fair hopes to show that there is more to life for cancer patients than just fighting the disease.
