Adaptation and transformation are the primary themes that characterize Dr. Ronnie Lim’s works for “A Cosmic Wilderness”. These issues manifest themselves in different ways — sometimes through the combination of disparate elements — a flower, an animal, or landscape merging with conceptual elements. Whether the forms are abstract or representational, there is always a sense of alteration or development into something new.
Movement, change, light, and growth are the lifeblood of nature, the energies that Dr. Lim attempts to tap through his work. For the artist, nature is ever in a state of change and that change is the key to understanding it. The aim is to create artworks that intrigue and challenge the viewer’s initial perceptions which depict the transient phenomena and capture these individual moments in time.
Dr. Lim’s work ranges from abstract to figurative expressions and takes on various forms intended to draw in the viewer as co-author and witness. The artist wishes to create new and unpredictable cycles of belief and associations, providing an experimental chance to challenge one’s impression, position, and assumptions about nature.
Though an avid sketcher as a young boy who bested his fellow students in art class, Dr. Lim entered the B.S. Biology program at the University of Santo Tomas as an aspiring doctor.
After getting accelerated and graduating cum laude, he continued his studies at the UST College of Medicine. Anatomy classes at medical school solidified his creative talent, encouraging him to cultivate his sketching skills. After graduating and taking his pediatric residency at Cardinal Santos Medical Center in 1993, Dr. Lim decided to pursue business.
Finally, in late 2008, he discovered and became remarkably invested in painting; a devotion that is evident in his work.
Having initiated his training under Renante “Rey” Aurelio at the Arte Pintura Gallery, adapting to the art form quickly and subsequently breaking off to work independently, Dr. Lim taught himself further techniques using a wide range of sources, focusing particularly on the masters. Since 2010, his works have been exhibited in various galleries around Metro Manila, several of which were one-man shows including at the recently concluded ManilArt 2019 that sold out. A prolific artist, Dr. Lim generates output consistently, whether as commissioned works for his clients or for his own sheer enjoyment. Incredibly passionate and wholly dedicated to his craft, he captures his love for the art in the intimacy of his works.
