The inaugural Severino Reyes Medal, recently introduced by the International Board on Books for Young People Philippines (IBBY-PH), has recognized the outstanding contributions of some of the Philippines’ best publishers, authors, and illustrators who have selflessly contributed to the development of Filipino children’s and young adults’ literature.
Celebrating International Children’s Book Day, the awards were given out in honor of the great Severino Reyes, considered as the Father of Tagalog Zarzuela and the Father of Filipino Plays.
This year’s recipients of the medal, named after the creator of “Mga Kuwento ni Lola Basyang,” include “I Like Wearing Rainbows” for Best Story Book (published by the Center for Art, New Ventures, and Sustainable Development, written by Agay Llanera, illustrated by Lui Manaig); “Kalambing” for Best Picture Book (published by Adarna House, written by Augie Rivera, illustrated by Al Estrella); and “Moymoy Lulumboy: Ang Batang Aswang” for Best Young Adult Book (published by Lampara Publishing House Inc., written by Segundo Matias Jr., illustrated by Jomike Tejido). The event was honored by the presence of the family of Severino Reyes, celebrating his life and works through the awards.
Cesar Gilbert Adriano, director of the National Library of the Philippines, formally opened the awarding ceremony, saying “we are creating history” because of the awards.
Adriano said that the awards not only support the valuable works and creations of passionate creative artists but also honor the commitment of the hardworking publishers.
“The awardees help in shaping the social, emotional, and intellectual attitude of the Filipino youth,” he added, providing interesting insights on every turn of the page, leaving amazing impressions at the end of every chapter, and offering fantastic experiences at the conclusion of each story.
Adriano added that the awardees brought inspiration, hope, and encouragement in every book made and produced, enriching the perspective, knowledge, and creativity of the readers, especially the youngsters, by connecting and exposing them to these works.
Cecille Medina, from the family of Severino Reyes, gave her words of appreciation during the event, expressing her heartfelt gratitude to Vibal Publishing House for acknowledging the legacy of their grandfather, which will be shared across the world to entice people to take a look at the simple stories once again.
