AN Army lieutenant colonel collapsed and later died while jogging in Davao City last Saturday.
The Davao City-based AFP Eastern Mindanao Command (Eastmincom) grieved over the loss of Lt. Col. Ezra Balagtey, describing him as a “dedicated soldier and leader.”
Balagtay is Eastminco’s assistant chief of unified command staff for plans and programs. He previously served as commander of the Army’s 39th Infantry Battalion, a post he vacated last month.
He also once served as spokesman of the Eastmincom, leading the command’s information campaign against the Communist Party of the Philippines and its armed wing, the New People’s Army.
The military said Balagtey and his wife were jogging at the Crocodile Park in Davao City at around 5:30 p.m. when the officer collapsed. He was brought to a hospital but was declared on arrival at 6:02 p.m.
“His exceptional leadership as the current Assistant Chief of Unified Command Staff for Plans and Programs has left a lasting legacy,” Eastmincom said in a statement.
It said Balagtey’s “unwavering commitment, courage, and leadership will forever be remembered.
“Lt. Col. Balagtey will be remembered for his steadfast dedication and deep passion for serving his country, leaving a legacy of loyalty, sacrifice, and an unshakeable commitment to duty,” Eastmincom said.
“His life exemplified the true spirit of selfless service, inspiring those around him and ensuring his memory will endure. May you rest in eternal peace, Sir,” Eastmincom added.
The 39th Infantry Battalion, currently headed by Lt. Col. Anthony Fer Solamo, said its officers and men “stand in solidarity with the bereaved family of Lt. Col. Balagtey during this time of profound loss.
“We extend our deepest condolences and share in your sorrow as we honor a leader, a brother-in-arms, and a dedicated servant of our country. His commitment, courage, and leadership will forever remain in our hearts,” the battalion said on its Facebook page.
It thanked Balagtey for his “selfless service and unwavering dedication to duty.
“You have inspired many, and your legacy will continue to guide us as we move forward,” it added.
