Teddy Casiño at WEF

After his lost bid at the Senate, former Rep. Teddy Casiño of Bayan Muna was not heard as much. People also wonder why he has not been active on his advocacies, even silent on some issues. It is a surprise that he has resurfaced and was among those who are protesting the holding of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Makati City. He was with militant activists who came near where the significant activity was being held. Bagong Alyansang Makabayan Secretary Renato Reyes was also present shouting that the poor are turned back, excluded and pushed over so the WEF is a farce since the poor are poorer and go even hungrier.

Stubborn Chinese poachers

The Chinese nationals caught poaching in Palawan were charged with violation of Republic Act 8550, the Fisheries Code, Section 87 (Poaching) in Philippine waters, and Section 97 or fishing or taking rare, threatened endangered species, and of RA 9147, the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection or Act. These are serious charges but the men insist that they were fishing legally in Chinese waters, the Half-moon Shoal. The men refused to have a lawyer from the Public Attorney’s Office and were recommended bail of P30,000 each, P40,000 each for violation of Sections 87 and 97. Although a representative of the Chinese Embassy was present, they did not provide their own legal counsel. The hard evidence points to their gross violation – their vessel and 350 sea turtles in their possession. They are deemed illegal entrants and will not be allowed to leave the country, but most likely will not spend jail time here.

THE country’s vulnerability and tolerance to a culture of corruption cannot be more evident than the alleged P 10 billion pork barrel scam that has implicated at least three senators.

I’m not a fan of activism but when I saw Akbayan group in news yelling at Chinese embassy and shouting  “West Philippine Sea is ours and China do you know how to measure” made me realize that we as   Filipinos have a role to play and that is to fight and protect our territory and sovereignty.

“Operation Darkhorse” or the offensive against members of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) was successful. Many BIFF members were flushed out, but the military says this doesn’t mean it has been defeated.
