Markets fall ahead of US bailout vote
Shock waves spreading

THE peso and share prices weakened yesterday as the shock waves from the US financial crisis continue spreading. The peso hit a low of 47.30 to the dollar but managed to close at 47.04 from Thursday’s close of 47.

The market continued to be well supplied with dollars with the total transactions at the Philippine Dealing System reaching $742.70 million.

The Philippine Stock Exchange index was down 46.68 points to 2,566.21, a 1.68 percent drop.

2 China-made products
found tainted; 28 cleared

TWO China-made products were found positive for melamine, the Department of Health and the Bureau of Food and Drugs said yesterday.

Greenfood Yili Fresh Milk and Mengniu Drink were found to have crossed the 1 parts-per-million testing threshold for the industrial chemical, said Health Secretary Francisco Duque.

The rest of the 30 milk products that have so far been tested by BFAD were found negative.

SC to Senate: What’s
status of ‘Joc Joc’ case?

THE Supreme Court has asked the Senate to disclose the status of its inquiry on the P728 million fertilizer fund scam in 2004 so it could rule on the petition filed by former Agriculture Undersecretary Jocelyn "Joc-Joc" Bolante in 2006 to nullify the arrest warrants against him.

In a minute resolution, the SC en banc resolved to "require the parties to manifest the status of the Senate inquiry within a non-extendible period of seven days."

The Blue Ribbon and agriculture and food committees investigated the fund scam and issued a warrant for Bolante’s arrest to compel him to testify but he fled to the US.
