Bodies, beauties and blooms in May

PAGEANT Watch had its fill of bodies, beauties and blooms last weekend when the Grand Santacruzan at Araneta Center, Quezon City and the swimsuit competition of Miss Philippines-Earth 2012 in Calatagan, Batangas were staged last Saturday even as the rain failed to dampen the spirits of the beauties as well as beauty connoisseurs at the start of the merry month of May.

A slight drizzle threatened the traditional parade of Bb. Pilipinas sagalas but umbrellas and other rain gear saved the day for everyone who witnessed the procession that honors the Blessed Virgin Mary.  Past and present Bb. Pilipinas titleholders and finalists graced the festivities with Miss Universe 1969 Gloria Diaz as Reyna Emperatriz and Miss International 2005 Precious Lara Quigaman as Reyna Elena leading the parade of beauties.

Gloria looked as queenly as ever, looking very elegant in her midnight black terno.  Lara was ravishing in her gold terno that complemented her Estelle pearl-studded Miss International crown. Miss Universe 3rd runner-up 2011Shamcey Supsup and Miss Universe 2010 4th runner-up Venus Raj were Rosa Mystica and Reyna delas Flores, respectively.

The reigning queens Janine Tugonon, Nicole Schmitz and Katrina Dimaranan, along with past titleholders also lent radiance to the parade of arches and kubols festooned with bright blooms and lights.

On the same day at about the same time, the swimsuit competition of the 2012 Miss Philippines Earth Pageant had to be moved to a small covered hall at the Golden Sunset Resort in Calatagan, Batangas after continuous rains made the outdoor stage by the poolside all wet.

Miss San Juan City Samantha Purvor was adjudged as Best in Swimsuit, besting the field of 47 health and environment-conscious delegates.  The 5’6 ½ BS Sports Science graduating student of the University of the Philippines also won the Gandang Ricky Reyes award.  Miss Tabuk City Glennifer Perido was chosen as Miss Golden Sunset Resort while Miss Puerto Princesa City Thoreen Halvorsen    was named as Miss Prime Med.

The swimsuit competition is part of the series of challenges that will demonstrate the skills, talents and environmental awareness of the delegates competitively, and the winners of the special awards will earn points that will increase their chances to make it as one of the ten finalists come coronation night at the Mall of Asia Centerstage on May 27 to be aired live by ABS-CBN.
