My first sighting of Tito Jake Macasaet was in Boracay — when his children, Allen and Bib, were celebrating their 20th wedding  anniversary. He was happily munching on his merienda at the resort we were all booked in. He was resplendent in his beach tee and signature wide smile. Tita Karen was within his hearing distance, like couples unwittingly but habitually are, after being knit together by decades of “cohabitation,” as some of my happily-married friends call it.

In comparison with our Asean peers, the Philippines was generally in the middle group in terms of number of financial institutions and ATMs per 10,000 adults. The country ranked highly in terms indicators per 100 square kilometers, indicating smaller distance to the nearest branch or ATM. In terms of usage, the number of deposit accounts per 10,000 adults in the Philippines was lower than most of our peers except Cambodia, Lao PDR, and Myanmar
