Vargas, Tolentino eligible to run

EXPECT a battle royale in the Philippine Olympic Committee election today after the POC election committee yesterday allowed the participation of boxing chief Ricky Vargas and cycling head Rep. Bambol Tolentino in the polls set at the Wack Wack Golf and Country Club in Mandaluyong.

“Under the interim rules of procedure governing intra corporate controversies, which to date has not been reversed or stayed, the POC Election Committee rules to allow Mr. Victorico Vargas and Rep. Abraham Tolentino to vie for the positions of POC president and POC chairman, respectively, in the Feb. 23, 2018 elections,” the committee ruled.

Vargas thus goes up against incumbent POC president Jose Cojuangco Jr., who ran unopposed two years ago after the former and Tolentino were disqualified from running then by the POC election committee for not being an “active members” in general assembly meetings.

Frank Elizalde, the International Olympic Committee to the Philippines, was head of the committee then and is also the current chairman of the present Election Committee and signed the resolution along with  members Fr. Bernie Oca and Atty. Alberto Agra, who had replaced Rep. Conrado Estrella III.

“I am sad that the POC is holding an election based on court orders. I will certainly inform the International Olympic Committee about it, “ Cojuangco said in a statement through POC spokesman Robert Mananquil shortly after the election committee announced its decision.

But it was not a total victory for the Vargas camp after the committee also ruled that Philippine Table Tennis Federatioh president Ting Ledesma was eligible to run as chairman under Cojuangco’s ticket because he met the requirements as a candidate.

“Insofar as the candidacy of Ting Ledesma is concerned, the POC Election Committee considers him qualified as he meets all the qualifications for the position of POC chairman. The POC Executive Board has certified that he is the president of the Philippine Table Tennis Federation,” the resolution said.

However, the POC election committee did not act on the status of newly-elected Philippine Swimming Inc. president Lani Velasco, weightlifting head Monico Puentevella and acting Philippine National Shooting Association president Richard Ferandez
“considering that the POC Election Committee cannot rule on the matter similarly.

“Those qualified to vote or not vote is within the exclusive jurisdiction of the POC Executive Board.”

Fernandez and Puentevella both support Vargas while Ledesma and Velasco are identified with Cojuangco.

In a press conference held at the Valle Verde Country Club last Wednesday, boxing executive director Ed Picson claimed they had 27 POC regular members backing the candidacies of Vargas and Tolentino.

There are 43 eligible voters, including Mikee Cojuangco-Jaworski, the IOC representative to the Philippines and daughter of the POC president, Rio Olympic silver medalist Hidylin Diaz and former national long jumper Henry Dagmil, representatives of the POC Athletes Commission.
