Hawkeyes go for share of second

CIGNAL HD stakes its three-game winning run and goes for a share of second when it tangles with winless Blustar Detergent today in the PBA D-League Aspirant’s Cup at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig.

Clashing at 11 a.m. are slumping Jose Rizal University and another winless team in Victoria Sports.

Sporting a 3-1 card, the Hawkeyes go into their 11 a.m. duel with the Dragons riding the crest of their 95-68 victory over Team Batangas last Feb. 13. Another win will lift them into a tie for second with CaféFrance.

Cignal HD coach Boyet Fernandez is pleased with how his charges, led by the core of defending NCAA champion San Beda and a slew of former pros, are making a serious title bid. He, however, refused to take Blustar Detergent lightly.

“I told the boys that every time they get a chance to play, they have to step up. But we don’t have to underestimate Blustar,” Fernandez said, adding that the Dragons won a game in the last conference they were supposed to lose.

Robert Bollick Jr., Byron Villarias, Jason Perkins, Javee Mocon, and Harold Arboleda will lead the Hawkeyes.

Still winless in three games, the Dragons are coming off a 52-88 loss to CaféFrance last Feb. 7.

After winning their first two outings, the Heavy Bombers have lost two straight and are in dire need of a win to fan their playoff hopes.

Paolo Pontejos, Bernabe Teodoro, Jerard Bautista, and John Grospe will be counted upon by JRU to make up for its 57-75 defeat at the hands of the Bakers last Feb. 9.

Victoria Sports is seeking a breakthrough win and it will pin its hopes on Robert Herndon, Aris Dionisio, and Edcel Mag-isa. The team is out to atone for its 80-88 loss to AMA Online Education last Feb. 13.
