Changes in coaching staff of MVP teams likely, says insider

SOME musical chairs are to be played out among coaches of the PBA teams owned by Manny V. Pangilinan any time now.

A reliable source yesterday said the top brass of TNT, Meralco and NLEX are bent on making such moves after the failure of the three teams to make it past the quarterfinals of the Commissioner’s Cup.

“Parang pahiyang lang,” said the insider, who spoke to Malaya-Business Insight on condition of anonymity.

“After each conference naman laging may evaluations, meetings and recommendations on how to improve,” added the source. “Kaya ang labas niyan, susubukan kung mag-wo-work.”

The idea, the source added, was hatched fully late Sunday evening.

Any such move would have to be done soon since the season-ending Governors Cup kicks off Aug. 17.

Pangilinan, TNT representative to the PBA Board and current league chairman Ricky Vargas and SBP chief and Meralco governor Al Panlilio were at courtside last Sunday and witnessed the third-ranked KaTropa absorb a sorry 102-106 loss to sixth seed San Miguel Beer, being swept in their best-of-three quarterfinals duel.

Earlier that same night, the Bolts lost to Ginebra 90-104 to also fall 0-2 in their own quarterfinals pairing.

NLEX did not even make it past the eliminations.

A lengthy meeting was held among the brass following the TNT loss.

“Mahaba-habang usapan din ang nangyari, pero central topic is how to improve and coaching changes were broached and seriously discussed,” related the source.

One possibility is for Jong Uichico to be relieved of his assistant coaching chores with Gilas Pilipinas and brought back to the PBA.

Should the plan with Uichico become a reality, one of the big questions is who would he replace.

Nash Racela currently handles TNT, Norman Black is at helm of  Meralco while NLEX is being steered by Yeng Guiao.
