Bolts seeking equalizer; Kings ready

DUE to a pleasant surprise delivered by one of its players, Meralco managed to buck the loss of one key player and stun Ginebra in Game 3.

The Kings brace for whatever else the Bolts may have up their sleeves when they collide tonight in Game 4 of their PBA Governors Cup championship series at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Reynel Hugnatan picked a fine time to play his best game of the season-ending conference by firing 22 points and helping Meralco notch a 94-81 win last Wednesday that cut Ginebra’s lead in the best-of-seven series to 2-1.

The performance came at a time the Bolts needed it most as Ranidel de Ocampo left the game early due to a suspected left calf muscle tear, which was confirmed after an MRI later at the Makati Medical Center.

That injury may keep the veteran forward out for the rest of the series, which shifts to the Philippine Arena in Bocaue, Bulacan for Games 5 to 7.

Meralco coach Norman Black has already steeled his team for such an eventuality and said he and his charges are ready to wage battle even without the man who is usually good for about nine points, 5.3 rebounds and tons of leadership by example on both ends of the court.

“It’s gonna be tough going forward, especially with Ranidel being out,” said Black. “But at the same time there are certain guys out there… so we’d go to war with them and we’re gonna do the best we can in the upcoming games.”

Hugnatan, who went into the game averaging just 1.0 point in the series, already did, spiking his performance with a 7-for-12 three-point shooting that helped stretch Ginebra’s defense and enabled Allen Durham to do his usual work inside on the way to a 38-point, 22-rebound performance.

Even the likes of Garvo Lanete and Anjo Caram did their part by coming off the bench and combining for 13 points while helping in a 19-4 run inside the last six minutes that decided the game.

Ginebra coach Tim Cone left the Big Dome immediately following a spat with Black. He did not grant any interview, but chief deputy Richard del Rosario did and offered some insight on what the Kings plan to do to prevent momentum from fully shifting to Meralco.

“They stepped up, especially nu’ng mawala si Ranidel,” said Del Rosario. “We just have to do a better job of respecting players coming off the bench.”

For Kings ace playmaker LA Tenorio, they should be over the surprise Hugnatan and the other Bolts relievers delivered and would be more focused on fine-tuning and ready tonight.

“Next game we have to have the mentality na do-or-die game talaga,” said Tenorio. “We’ll go out with a do-or-die mentality. Iba ‘yung aggressiveness pag ganu’n ang mentality. “

Even Durham said the breakthrough win is nice, but that still doesn’t guarantee anything and Game 4 would really be crucial.

“We won a game tonight but we haven’t really done anything yet,” said Durham. “We just extended the series a little bit. Now we get to Game 4, we win that then we got a series. The whole thing changes so we gotta focus on Game 4.”
