‘23 for 23’ list of Chot praised

COACHES Boyet Fernandez and Bo Perasol agree that Gilas Pilipinas mentor Chot Reyes made a good move when he released a “23 for 23” list in the team’s early preparation for the 2023 FIBA World Cup the country will be hosting.

“As for the Gilas list, maganda ang line-up and credit to coach Chot and his team for really taking time to analyze every player as well as their needs for the World Championships in 2023,” Fernandez told Malaya-Business Insight yesterday.

“We all know that we are already seeded for the championships being one of the hosts so this is great for our country, thanks to boss MVP and his group as well,” he added.

Fernandez, who calls the shots for defending back-to-back NCAA champion San Beda College, has three players in the 23-man list – Robert Bolick, Javee Mocon, and Kemark Cariño.

Leading the collegiate and top high school standouts set to be part of the national training pool are Kobe Paras, Ateneo star Thirdy Ravena, reigning NCAA MVP CJ Perez, Far Eastern University standout Arvin Tolentino, and Blue Eagle Isaac Go.

Completing the list are the University of the Philippines’ pair of Paul Desiderio and Juan Gomez De Liano, Ateneo playmaker Matt Nieto, former National University star Jayjay Alejandro, Tamaraw Kenneth Tuffin, Letran big man Jeo Ambohot, Bulldog Joshua Sinclair, and former Green Archer Abu Tratter.

Gilas coach Chot Reyes also included high school prospects Kai Sotto, Will Gozum, AJ Edu, and Carl Vincent Tamayo and Filipino-Americans Remy Martin, Dwight Ramos and Troy Rike.

“Knowing coach Chot, he will surely make this line-up work for the championship, I am pretty sure marami pang changes iyan kasi matagal pa naman ang 2023 at marami pang susulpot na deserving na players diyan but at least we are starting early and it is a good sign for the team,” said Fernandez.

“I’m happy and proud for them (San Beda players) for being in the list and siyempre San Beda is also happy that three of our players made it in the pool for a chance to play in World Championships.”

Perasol, who handles Desiderio and De Liano at the Fighting Maroons’ camp, stressed the importance of starting early for the 2023 FIBA World Cup.

“I think that assembling a pool for the 2023 FIBA World Cup is the right way to do it. If these young guys can play and train together for the next five years then add a younger naturalized player, I believe that it should be our best chance to compete with the rest of the field,” said Perasol.

“The inclusion of Paul and Juan is a testament to our program’s commitment to improve the skills and basketball abilities of our players and we’re proud of them,” Perasol added. – Michael Jugado
