BMW 2 SERIES GRAN TOURER

MULTI-PASSENGER movers once thought only as the official transporter of the soccer mom is now the future of mobility. Carmakers are designing away from individuality and moving into multi-use vehicles. German automaker BMW has jumped into this segment with the BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer, its first foray to the multi-passenger, multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) category.

“We are proud to present this vehicle, the first of its kind in the luxury segment, to the Philippine market,” Asian Carmakers Corporation (ACC) president Maricar Parco said at the launch of a four-weekend exhibition of its vehicles called the BMW Roadshow 2017.

Comfort and clever functionality come together with the new seven-seater from the luxury brand. There is plenty of space, a different level of versatility and groundbreaking flexibility as this model is the world’s first premium compact model to offer up to additional rear seats to fully meet the mobility requirements of young families.

BMW is known for both breaking the rules and innovating on what is already existing.

Thus in true BMW tradition, the Gran Tourer is differentiated by a unique space-functional concept which becomes immediately apparent in its shape. Unlike traditional people carriers with chubby and bulging contours, precise lines in a stretched look defines its dynamic and
powerful style. With very little distinction from its equally prestigious siblings, the trademark kidney grille nicely traces itself back into the whole vehicle’s total shape.

Just how roomy is roomy? It stands 214  mm longer and 53 mm higher than its five-seater brother the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer. Naturally, the longer wheelbase, measuring 2,780 mm means a significant increase in space plus the higher roofline allows driver and passengers to sit tall and upright while affording excellent all-round vision and also allows getting in and out of the vehicle much easier having the kind of rear legroom that is normally the reserved for even more luxurious cars.

There are seven seats. The fore-aft sliding middle seat bench with a 50:50-split backrest that folds down conveniently, when unused converts to a generous load compartment that extends from 560 to 1,820 liters. Then the third row of seats can be completely lowered into the loading floor to provide a flat cargo space, that maximizes the vehicle’s everyday practicality—highligted by a range of storage options for all three rows of seats, as well as rails on the front-seat backrests with fold-out tables attached.

“We are dedicated to continuously deliver Sheer Driving Pleasure not only to our valued clientele but aspiring owners who seek only the best in mobility. Today, with the debut of the BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer, we extend our market presence by offeringan automobile fit for the lifestyle of growing families,” Parco said.

An extremely compact and lightweight 1.5-liter three-cylinder petrol engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology powers the Gran Tourer.

It develops 100 kW (136 hp) and peak torque of 220 Nm. With a six-speed automatic gearbox, the vehicle accelerates from from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 9.8 seconds. It shares its advanced front-wheel-drive architecture with transversely front-mounted engines with the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer, also offers the driver the option of sporty, comfortable or particularly economical overall vehicle settings based on the driving situation or personal preference available via the Driving Experience Control switch in front of the center console.

The driving pleasure on tap in the new BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer is not just down to the brand’s typical driving dynamics but also thanks to exemplary levels of fuel economy. The latter comes courtesy of the BMW EfficientDynamics, which extends to virtually every facet of the vehicle.
The BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer unites the segment’s traditional attributes—such as spatial functionality and comfort—with the characteristic BMW values of dynamics, elegance and premium quality.

See the BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer make its third appearance in the the BMW Roadshow 2017 on November 16 to 19 at the SM Mall of Asia Block 12 in Pasay, and November 24 to 26 at the Alabang Town Center Plaza in Muntinlupa, from 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM, daily.

It has already completed the first two weekends last October 27 to 29 at the North Court, Power Plant Mall, Makati, and November 10 to 12 at the Lucky Chinatown Main Mall Atrium in Manila. Check out the BMW Philippines Facebook page for more details. - Gregory E. Bautista
