‘Pedestrianization’

The Makati central business district (MCBD) continues its pedestrianization program with the opening of the new Sen. Gil J. Puyat avenue overpass.

The first of two new footbridges has been inaugurated by the Makati Commercial Estate Association (MaCEA) in cooperation with the Makati City government.

The  new P55-million overpass will serve thousands of pedestrians and motorists traversing the avenue 24/7 and  is expected to significantly improve traffic on this main arterial road.

The Sen. Gil J. Puyat Avenue overpass was built with a roof cover, glass railings, and staircases and escalators on both sides. It extends 38 meters long from the RCBC Plaza building to The Columns Ayala Avenue.

The second overpass will stretch from the People Support building to the Makati Postal Office.

MaCEA’ pedestrianization program  encourages and supports walking as a safer, more convenient and even enjoyable option of getting around the bustling central business district. As the heart of

the country’s financial and commercial businesses, the district has been plagued by traffic woes and its accompanying problems of pollution and congestion.

MaCEA, as an association of property owners in the MCBD, has taken the lead in many improvements across the district. It has recently embarked on the escalator modernization program which has now replaced 11 escalators in the Legazpi Underpass, V.A. Rufino St., Paseo de
Roxas and the elevated walkway leading to Greenbelt 5. Some 18 more escalators across the MCBD have been scheduled for upgrades.

MaCEA is also rolling out a new and improved wayfinding system across the MCBD. Some 28 new street signs featuring bolder and visible-in-the-dark graphic designs have so far been installed. The street signs are now larger and feature reflectorized text for better visibility.

MaCEA’s ongoing sidewalk improvement project involves installing roofs and lighting fixtures over sidewalks.

In the latest run of the project, MaCEA completed the improvement of  14,721 square meters (sq.m. of open sidewalks in Salcedo Village and Legazpi Village. New tiles and ornamental plants have been installed. Some 1,878 sq.m. walkways have also been outfitted with roofs and
overhead lighting in the same areas.

“Ultimately, our pedestrianization project aims to ease traffic in the MCBD and encourage motorists to abandon the habit of taking short hops through MCBD streets and take to walking instead. We hope that more people will be able to appreciate the health benefits, the savings in
gas, the ease and convenience that walking will bring,” said  David  Balangue, MaCEA president.
