Saddened by hippo’s death

I am saddened by Bertha’s death – she spent over half a century out of her natural habitat to entertain humans. It is also alarming that Mayor Estrada asking for a new hippo and other animals. No more animals should go through a lifetime of confinement like poor Bertha was forced to endure. And asking for another hippo to spend his or her entire life at the Manila Zoo like Bertha did is even more cruel. Animals at the Manila Zoo are lonely, sad, and exploited for money. They are deprived of everything that is natural to them. They are deprived of home.

This is why I don’t go to the zoo because zoos only care about profit, not animal welfare. Animals are not for our entertainment. Animals deserve to spend their lives free from human control, not in total confinement. I urge Manila Zoo officials to not purchase more animals simply to put them behind bars, like they did to Bertha, and like they are doing to other animals at the zoo. Let us put an end to animal suffering. We humans have done too much. Way too much. – GERWAYNE MAE CHUA, Ipil St., Brgy. Cembo, Kalayaan Avenue, Makati City
