Guesswork against a virus

DENGUE cases over the two previous years hit more than 420,000. Of that number 1,668 died, many of them children between one to four years old.

There is no indication that there will be a dramatic reduction this year despite efforts by health authorities and local governments to control the spread of the disease through traditional methods of going after the breeding grounds of mosquitos bearing the virus.

A year ago, the Department of Health started a P3.5 billion dengue vaccination program making the Philippines the first country in Asia to do so. The objective was to prevent re-infection of other dengue strains, which are usually more severe and, at times, fatal.

Free Dengvaxia shots were given to public school children nine years or older based on the guidance of vaccine maker Sanofi Pasteur.

The current DOH administration however suspended the program late last year after issues were raised about the efficacy of the vaccine, its side effects, and criticisms that Filipino children are being used as test subjects for human trials.

The World Health Organization however has approved Dengvaxia in April 2016. Other than the Philippines, the vaccine has also been licensed in Mexico and Brazil in the same year.

Since then several other countries followed suit including our neighbors Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam and recently, Malaysia. In Latin America, Colombia and Puerto Rico have also started.

Estimates placed Sanofi-Pasteur’s production capacity at 100 million vaccines per year tops. This number is dwarfed by the projected demand of one billion every five years.

Other global drug companies are speeding up their own development of alternatives with Japan’s Takeda Pharmaceuticals announcing this week that it is testing a version with better initial results than the vaccine already on the market. Conclusive results of its clinical study however are not expected until early 2018.

With several other countries already placing their orders for the available vaccine, the DOH decision to suspend the program could place our country at the back of the line for supply. But if the conservative warnings prove correct of the potential hazards of a largely untried vaccine, then we would have avoided another major problem.

Meantime health officials, and LGUs had better step up campaigns on getting rid of areas where dengue-carrying mosquitoes can lay their eggs.

The virus may strike down many more of our young people before a solution in a bottle really comes around. – PT.
