Finally, better airports

AFTER several years of being in the list of the “20 worst airports” the Ninoy Aquino International Airport --NAIA-- is finally no longer in the 2017 survey released by travel website, The Guide to Sleeping in Airports.

In the the same Guide for the 2017 survey, four (4) Philippine provincial airports were listed as among the top 25 best airports in Asia. Joining the list-- Iloilo International Airport, Mactan-Cebu International Airport, Clark International Airport, and Davao International Airport.

Cited were the following reforms made during the Duterte administration:

• Restriction on general aviation to prioritize commercial flights and reduce flight delays;

• Imposition of the five-minute rule [where pilots who declare they are ready to take off must depart within the prescribed time or they would be put back at the back of the queue] to reduce flight delays and instill discipline among airlines;

• Construction of Rapid Exit Taxiways to allow an aircraft to leave the runway at higher speed and increase flight movements; and

• Provision of cleaner toilets, additional waiting seats, free Wi-Fi, and Well-Wishers’ Area.

•  Regular taxis to queue and pick-up passengers at the designated points in NAIA terminals to address shortage of taxi units servicing passengers.

In previous surveys conducted by “The Guide to Sleeping in Airports” travel website:

In 2011 to 2013,the Manila airport earned the world’s worst airport title.

In 2014, the Manila airport ranked fourth place as the world’s worst airport.

In 2015 the Manila airport was named the eighth worst airport in Asia.

In 2016, NAIA was named fifth worst airports in Asia.

“The bigger challenge is to maintain or even surpass our achievement,” Manila International Airports Authority General Manager Ed Monreal, who still consider improving NAIA as a challenge.

During his 1st week in office, Transport chief Arthur Tugade had agreed to let local airlines undertake the maintenance of public restrooms at NAIA’s 4 terminals – at no cost to the government. Tugade had also asked help from the country’s two telecommunications giants, PLDT Incorporated and Globe Telecom Incorporated, to set up free Wi-Fi in almost all airports.

Rep. Campos tells us that provincial airports unable to operate at night, also have to send out all their Manila-bound flights during the day. Only 19 of the country’s 42 airports are able to receive and dispatch night flights.

NAIA, which has only two runways handling both international and domestic flight.

The 19 will increase to 27, once the eight airports have been set up for round-the-clock operations.

“There’s no question air travel around the country will be easier for everybody, including foreign tourists, once we get all our airports running at night to maximize their operations,” Campos said.

Campos earlier bared that government has set aside total of P10.1 billion in fresh funding to modernize the infrastructures of 40 airports in 2018, with Clark International Airport getting the biggest slice of P2.74 billion.
