‘Golden Age of Partnership’

THE Philippines and Japan are entering a “Golden Age” of strategic partnership, President Rodrigo Roa Duterte declared after meeting Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Tokyo last Monday, October 30, 2017.

During his two-day official visit to Japan, Duterte thanked the Japanese government for its readiness to support his programs and rehabilitation of battle-torn Marawi City, Lanao del Sur.

In his own words, as quoted from a report of Philstar Global, Duterte said , “our commitment and resolve show the desire to further expand cooperative ties. I dare say that, considering what we have described as accomplished and achieved. The Philippines and Japan are building a golden age of partnership.”

On his part, Abe said it was a great honor for him to welcome Duterte whom he described as his “dear and cherished friend.”

Abe also also vowed to provide maximum support to the Duterte administration’s efforts to rebuild Marawi City, which was ravaged by the six-month long clashes between the government military forces and Islamic militants.

Duterte thanked Abe for supporting the efforts to address terrorism and his readiness to provide timely assistance to residents affected by the war in Marawi City.

Duterte and Abe also promised to promote bilateral cooperation in energy, employment creation, and communication technology, environment, agriculture and disaster reduction.

Finally, Abe added, “I would like to work hand in hand with my close friend President Duterte, to further deepen the bonds of friendship between the Philippines and Japan, and we will cooperate towards peace and prosperity of the region and the international community.”
