Suspect in P6.4B drug smuggling still in PH?

JUSTICE Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II yesterday said that it is assumed that one of the suspects in the smuggling of P6.4 billion worth of illegal drugs from China last year is still in the country despite attempting twice to flee.

Aguirre, in a briefing in Malacanang, said Richard Chen, also known as Richard Tan, owner of the Hongfei Logistics warehouse in Valenzuela City linked to the alleged drug smuggling, had tried to leave the country through some provincial airports at least twice.

He said an immigration officer, who had now gone absent without leave (AWOL) and whom he declined to identify, had tried to help Chen.

He said apart from attempting to leave the country, Chen had also reportedly tried to bribe an immigration official with P10 million after he was prevented from leaving because an immigration lookout bulletin (ILBO) had been issued against him.

“We received information that in fact, reliable information, that one of these (respondents) was trying to get out of the country,” Aguirre said but declined to provide more details about Chen’s alleged attempts, adding the details are with the Bureau of immigration.

He acknowledged that Chen could have slipped out of the country using some fake documents but at present the assumption is he is still in the country
