Magnitude 4.5 quake hits Davao Oriental

A MAGNITUDE 4.5 earthquake struck near the southeastern coast of Davao Oriental yesterday, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

Phivolcs said the tremor occurred at 12:38 p.m., with the epicenter traced some 190 km southeast of Governor Generoso town in Davao Oriental. It was tectonic in origin and had a depth of 81 km.

Gienela Pondevida, science research assistant of the Phivolcs’ Earthquake Monitoring Division, said movement along the Philippine Trench possibly triggered the quake. She said the agency is still verifying if the tremor is related to the magnitude 5.7 tremor that hit Davao Oriental last April 10.

The Philippine Trench is under water east of the country and runs roughly from waters off Aurora down to Samar and past Mindanao.

Pondevida said the number of aftershocks from the magnitude 6 quakes that recently hit Mabini, Batangas (April 8) and Wao, Lanao del Sur (April 12) continued to rise.

As of 1:30 p.m. yesterday, 516 aftershocks with magnitudes between 2.1 and 5.3 were recorded in Lanao del Sur, and 2,052 aftershocks with magnitudes between 1.8 and 4.7 in Batangas. – Angela Lopez de Leon
