Duterte eyes visits to 4 countries

PRESIDENT Duterte is planning a visit to at least four countries this year, presidential spokesman Harry Roque said yesterday.

In an interview with radio dzXL, Roque said the visits being planned are to India, South Korea, Australia, and Israel.

During a press briefing in Malacañang, he said the “planned visits” are still being discussed by the Department of Foreign Affairs with its counterparts.

The plan to visit India was first mentioned during the meeting of President with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the sidelines of the 31st Association of Southeast Asian Nations Summit in Manila in November 2017. Modi invited Duterte to attend the ASEAN-India Commemorative Summit in New Delhi this month. Duterte responded by saying, “In God’s will, I will be there.”

South Korean President Moon Jae-In, also during their bilateral meeting at the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit in Manila, invited Duterte to visit his country.

In May 2017, Duterte said he plans to visit Israel along with Russia.

He was able to visit Russia in May last year but the trip was cut short because of the attack by the Maute terror group in Marawi City. The battle between government forces and the Maute Group lasted five months. – Jocelyn Montemayor
